Animation Masterclass Series

June 1, June 8, and June 15 • 3:00 - 4:00 PM

Over 3 online workshops, students will be introduced to the very basics of animation. From idea development, to animation principles, to visual storytelling, participants will start to think like an animator! At the end of the three sessions, expect to have a portfolio of drawings, storyboards, and 2-3 short animated cycles.  

Animation Classes:

  1. Visual Design and Idea Development:

    • Start the planning of a short animated scene

    • Character Design

    • Color Planning and creating a "color story"

    • Different Shot Types and how and when to use them

      • Software used will be primarily in an iPad with Procreate and Rough animator

      • Alternative materials: pencil, paper, coloring tools; Adobe Photoshop; Storyboarder by Wonder Unit (free desktop software)

  2. Digital Animation Introduction:

    • Create a walk cycle with your own character

    • Brief Discussion of animation principles

    • Introduction to timing sheets

      • Software used: Procreate and Rough Animator for the Apple iPad

      • Alternative materials: pencil, unruled notecards, lightbox (or window); OpenToonz (free desktop software); Storyboarder by Wonder Unit (free desktop software); Adobe Photoshop; Flip A Clip (free or paid version for phone or tablet) 

  3. Visual Storytelling:

    • Use previous skills to plan out production for an animated short film

    • Students will view and discuss 2 animated short films, and learn how to break down story, structure, and production timeline

      • Materials Used: any of the previously discussed software; a sketchbook to keep ideas, drawings, outlines, and technical notes all in one place!

Before each class, students will get an email with a page of notes, links to resources, and a link to an animated short film that will be discussed during the session. Some "homework" exercises will be assigned with each session so that students can take time to practice and apply lessons. Each master class can stand alone, but participants are encouraged to attend all 3.
