Essee Kupcinet
Essee Kupcinet, a remarkable figure and the beloved spouse of Sun-Times columnist Irv Kupcinet, dedicated her entire life to the arts.
A true Chicagoan, she was a person whose warmth and love endeared her to all who knew her. Her journey through the realms of entertainment and culture began when, in 1943, her husband Irv launched "Kup's Column," propelling them both into the limelight as iconic figures in Chicago's entertainment scene. In 1959, their collaborative magic continued with the start of a 27-year run of the renowned late-night talk show, "Kup's Show."
Essee's legacy is one of nurturing and championing talent, spanning from high-profile celebrities to aspiring young artists. She possessed a deep and unwavering love for artists and an unshakable belief in their boundless potential.
In 1980, after nearly four decades of actively shaping the Chicago entertainment industry, Essee extended her passion and expertise to The Academy. She joined its inaugural Board of Trustees, holding the position of Vice Chairman. Her involvement with The Academy marked the convergence of her life's work and her commitment to fostering emerging talent.
Tragically, Essee left us in 2001, leaving behind a void that could never be filled. However, her memory lives on in a meaningful and lasting way. To honor her enduring contributions, the Irv and Essee Kupcinet Leadership Award was established in 2004. This award serves as a testament to her profound impact on the Chicago arts community and The Chicago Academy for the Arts, ensuring that her legacy will forever be cherished and remembered. Essee Kupcinet's spirit of support, love, and belief in the arts continues to inspire and uplift generations of artists and creatives who follow in her footsteps.
